The Town Scryer is a mixed bag of humor, socio-political observations and ephemera from the perspective of a eclectic Pagan veteran of the counter-culture.

Man Arrested For Refusing To Tell Cop Where He Was Born

                             Ihre Papieren, bitte!

" Vesselin Dittrich, 64, of Hoboken, said he was involved in a conversation in the PATH station in August 2010 with a woman who yelled at him for supposedly looking at her tattoos. The woman summoned a police officer, who told the two to disperse. Dittrich says that the officer said there would be no charges, but asked to take down Dittrich’s information anyway.

Dittrich said he provided information from his driver’s license, but when the officer asked what country he was from, he declined to answer, believing it to be irrelevant and unconstitutional. He says the officer issued him a disorderly conduct ticket for “refusing to provide pedigree information.”"

Dittrich, an American citizen who was born in Bulgaria, has stood on principle and refused to accept a small fine in exchange for a guilty plea. After over a year, he will go to trial December 13th.

The prosecution is asking for jail time.

The Ultimate Fan

This German art student, Benjamin Harff, decided, for his exam at the Academy of Arts, to do something only slightly ambitious — to hand-illuminate and bind a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’sSilmarillion. It took him six months of work. In very 21st century elvish-monk style, he hand-illuminated the text which had been printed on his home Canon inkjet printer. He worked with a binder to assemble the resulting book.

A Failure To Communicate of Epic Proportions

It all started when the ten year-olds at Ashbeach Primary School in Ramsey Sy Marys, Cambrigeshire, U.K. brought this note home to their parents:

''Following our successful visit to Welney Marshes last year, the Ely and District Wildfowlers Association has invited us to go and see an evening flight with them at Welney...
''The children will be finding out about the different species of wildfowl that live on the wetlands at Welney, the conservation of the landscape carried out by the wildfowlers and the dogs and equipment used as part of the sport.
''Children will be safely contained in a purpose-built hide during the talk and wildfowling demonstration.''

A large number of the children and their parents understandably believed that the children were to spend a pleasant day in the country bird watching.

In fact it was a hunting trip. Many of the children burst into tears, sobbing as the birds were blasted out of the sky and the carcasses born back by the dogs.

It seems it never occurred to the school officials that many parents would not know that "wildfowling" was a term for duck hunting.

I suspect attorneys, and therapists, will become involved shortly.

What's Up Entomologist?

Adventurer Mark Moffett has found the world’s biggest insect - which is so huge it can eat carrots. The former park ranger discovered the giant weta up a tree and his real life Bugs Bunny has now been declared the largest ever found. He came across the cricket-like creature, which has a wing span of seven inches, after two days of searching on a tiny island. The creepy crawly is only found on Little Barrier Island, in New Zealand. The species was wiped off the mainland by rats accidentally introduced by Europeans.

Share The Snakes Program

There is a legend about the great Chicago activist, Saul Alinsky to the effect that after repeated appeals to Mayor Richard Daley fell on deaf ears regarding conditions in some of the city's poorer neighborhoods he hit upon a unique solution. He enlisted many of the residents of the afflicted neighborhoods, asking them to catch as many rats as they could. Said rats had to be kept alive. He then marched everyone down to City Hall where they released dozens of ghetto rats in what he called the "Share the Rats Program".

In India, someone has gone the late Mr. Alinsky one better. A snake charmer, fed up with attempting to navigate a labyrinthine bureaucracy, released some forty snakes, including spitting cobras, in an Uttar Pradesh tax office.

Hakkul Khan said that he was seeking a plot of land on which to keep his reptiles.

Khan explained to reporters that he was forced to let the snakes loose because the government was seeking bribes in order to process his request.

“I am a conservationist and have been seeking the government’s help,” he said. “Having waited patiently for so long, I had no option but to leave all my snakes in this office.”

The forestry service was eventually able to recapture all of the snakes.

They are still looking for Khan however.

We Have a Winner In the Hypocrisy Trifecta!

Today's Republican in an orange jumpsuit is former Arapahoe County Colorado Sheriff , Patrick J. Sullivan jr. The former Sheriff (1984-2002) and one time Sheriff of the year was charged with trading meth for gay sex.

It all started when a man called 911 complaining that an "old guy" was getting his recovering-addict roommates "back into drugs".

" When the man told Sullivan to leave his Centennial home or he would call police, he said Sullivan replied: "If you want the police, I am the police," and flashed a badge."

Sullivan was arrested after police used a hidden camera to capture him offering meth to informants in the bedroom of an Aurora, Colorado home.
